Poor thing. I never had to read Moby Dick.

And I know you do.

And "Having Unprotected Sex With Well Over 500 Partners" killed Freddy Mercury. But from what I've heard it was a hell of a book. :B

If that is a fact, you officially beat me at life.

Yes. We had them in my math class last semester. Instead of actually having a lesson, my prof decided we should spend the last day of class celebrating "Official Kumquat Week." He explained the story of the kumquat, toldjokes and quotes about kumquats, showed us his kumquat memorabilia collection, and gave us all one to try (after demonstrating the proper kumquat-eating technique). It was fun, even if I did question his sanity.

I love Catcher In The Rye, even if it is for the entire "oh my god, I'm a melodramatic teenager and I really connect to Holden Caulfield at this moment in time, and my whole life makes sense while reading these words!" Actually, I've never really felt that- I like Salinger's writing, not just Catcher, but the short stories, too.

I feel I had to justify myself, as I must justify everything I do in life.

We're not saying these books aren't good, of course. We're saying that college kids list them as their favourite books to make themselves sound smart. Which is something I find offensive; it's like when people say Led Zeppelin is one of their favourite bands when they only know a handful of songs, probably whichever ones they've heard on the radio.

I do love Led Zeppelin, and sometimes I feel like, because so many people say they do too, nobody will take me seriously. Similarly, I'm sure there are people on facebook who do love Catcher in the Rye, but there are also entirely too many who don't, really, but say they do anyway.
